Some things I prefer

A simple poem inspired by Nobel Laureate Wislawa Szymborska’s Possibilities

This simple piece is inspired by Possibilities, the poem penned by Nobel Laureate Wislawa Szymborska (by way of Maria Popova).

I prefer gelato.
I prefer big and lively cities.
I prefer a meticulously planned calendar because
I prefer to be intentional about my days, weeks, months and lifetime.
Yet I also prefer serendipitous windows of spontaneity.
I prefer warm weather.
I prefer public transportation.
I prefer candor, straightforwardness and gentle bluntness.
I prefer those with dreams and ambitions.
I prefer to be a romantic than a realist.
I prefer to arrive fashionably late.
I prefer slow travel.
I prefer to create an equal or greater amount to that of my consumption.
I prefer friends that honor their word (and our plans).
I prefer to question assumptions.
I prefer dark dive bars to loud sports bars.
I prefer letters and postcards.
I prefer older romantic prospects.
I prefer the discomfort of feeling deeply and intensely
to the discomfort of not feeling enough.
I prefer a little mystery and intrigue.
I prefer to be hopeful than a cynic.
I prefer sleeping in.
I prefer eccentricity.
I prefer those with curiosities, interests and hobbies.
I prefer striving for a meaningful existence.
I prefer having written to writing.
I prefer strong coffee.
I prefer active listening.
I prefer melancholic musings.
I prefer the heartbreak that follows a great love
to not having loved at all.
I prefer constant contemplation.
I prefer thoughtfulness.
I prefer creative communities.
I prefer the madness and rollercoaster of ~following your truth~
to the madness of following what’s ‘normal’ and expected.

What do you prefer?
