Each year, Hispanic Heritage Month is observed in the U.S., from Sept. 15th through Oct. 15th, to recognize the important contributions Latinos/Hispanics have made to the country. During this month, Hispanic history and culture are honored. To join in on the annual celebration, photographer Viv Delgadillo and I honor our heritage through a tribute to Maria Felix, Mexico’s most legendary film actress. Through this visual and written homage, we aim to capture her iconic style and independent spirit.
Some of you may not know this about me: I am an obsessive movie buff. From foreign, to indies, to comedies, I enjoy most genres. I do have a sweet spot for weird and artistic films but I also love feel good features. With Thanksgiving fast approaching, I thought I’d get in the holiday spirit and share a heartwarming movie I recently watched – Buen Día (Guten Tag), Ramón.
I want to tell you about my love of podcasts… Podcasts are free audio programs distributed over the internet. There are podcasts on any topics that tickle your fancy and their simplicity lies in the fact that you can listen to them on your laptop or cell phone. They're perfect for our busy lives. I began listening to this form of mobile radio about two years ago. I’ve been hooked ever since! And I am not alone. About 17% of the U.S. population listen to podcasts on a monthly basis. Some of the most well known options include This American Life, Radiolab, Serial, etc. but I want to go beyond these and share some lesser known podcasts that deserve your attention. So, let’s listen away… Here are my top 5 favorite with suggested episodes. Hope you'll give them a listen!
I am very particular and selective when it comes to investing my time into television series. I am aware there is a plethora of fantastic shows out there. But I rather stay away from them because when I find a show that I enjoy, it’s game over. I instantly become obsessed. It’s all I think about. It’s all I want to do. It becomes unhealthy. To retain my sanity, I try not to get into TV shows at all. It’s kind of the same approach I use for dating – I largely avoid it for my own benefit. I have better things in which I want to focus my energy, all right. Aside from Broad City and Portlandia, I prefer movies and documentaries because they are usually a 2-hour commitment. I haven’t lost my mind over a show since Breaking Bad (okay fine, maybe Doctor Who too. Don’t judge me). Until I watched Mr. Robot… Twenty minutes into the pilot, I was ready to commit to a long-term relationship and even marry this series!
